There are three main types of Taekwondo:
1. International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF): Founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, this style emphasizes self-defence techniques, patterns (or "tuls"), and a more philosophical approach to training.
2. World Taekwondo Federation (WTF): Established by the South Korean government in 1973, WTF Taekwondo is known for its fast-paced, competitive nature, focusing on high kicks, speed, and agility. This style is also recognized in the Olympic Games.
3. A third type, not explicitly mentioned but often referred to in broader discussions of Taekwondo, includes various independent or hybrid styles that blend elements from ITF, WTF, and other martial arts traditions. These styles may focus on specific aspects such as practical self-defence, physical conditioning, or cultural and historical preservation of traditional Korean martial arts.

The three types of TKD are Sport, demonstration and Practical.
Sport TKD is the most common type of TKD, where sparring takes place on a matted area with referees and judges.
Demonstration TKD is the second most common type, where the purpose is to make TKD entertaining to onlookers.
Practical TKD is used in live uncontrolled situations, where the goal is to damage a person as quickly as possible.
These types have different training strategies and goals, and training for one type does not guarantee success in another.
Each type of TKD requires a different approach, and understanding these differences is crucial for success in TKD.
The types of TKD have little overlap, and training for one type does not translate to another.
However, training for multiple types can be beneficial, as long as the training goals are clear.
By identifying the differences and modifying practice accordingly, one can be more successful in TKD.
Ultimately, the purpose of Practical TKD is not to use TKD at all, but to be prepared for self-defense situations.

The World Taekwondo Federation style is the most common style of taekwondo, used in most sporting events such as the Olympics. The International Taekwondo Federation style is more traditional. American Taekwondo Association is one of the most popular styles in the United States. It is considered easier than both ITF and WTF, mainly due to the fact that it only takes up to two years to gain a black belt in ATA, while it takes around four and seven years for the other two respectively. ATA requires participants to wear a head guard, mouth guard, groin guard, foot gear, hand gear, as well as a face mask during competitions, unlike the previous two styles.
