Points are awarded for technique when landing punching blows with additional points awarded for turning kicks. One point for a valid punch to the trunk protector. Two Points for a valid kick to the trunk protector. Four points for a valid turning kick to the trunk protector. Three points for a valid kick to the head. Five points for a valid turning kick to the head. Points are determined by using an electronic scoring system installed in the head or trunk protectors, known as the Protector and Scoring Systems (PSS), to help judges who use a manual scoring device. Athletes can win by knockout but typically whoever scores the most points after three rounds wins the match. Points are awarded by judges using manual scoring devices based on the PSS.

In Taekwondo competition, the object is to land kicks and punches upon the scoring zones of your opponent. These are the the torso and the head and both kicks and punches must be accurate and powerful, as light tapping kicks are not counted by scorers. Punches are only allowed to the body. A player gets one point for a basic attack to the opponent’s torso. Below the waist is not a permitted target. Kicks are allowed to both to the torso and head, whilst punches are only allowed to the body. Fighters can lose points by the way of penalties, such as punching to the face, attacking with the knee, or attacking below the waist. The match is won by the fighter who knocks their opponent out or who has the greater number of points at the end of the three rounds. If the match is a draw, a golden point round is fought, with the fighter landing the first scoring point being declared the winner.

In this discipline both hand and foot attacks to the body are permitted but only kicks to the head are allowed in competition. The scoring system differentiates points based on the weapon and target area, awarding them as follows: One (1) point for a valid punch to the trunk protector Two (2) points for a valid kick to the trunk protector Three (3) points for a valid kick to the head Four (4) points for a valid turning kick to the trunk protector Five (5) points for a valid turning kick to the head Competitors win by points (higher total points at end of bout), points gap (having more than a 20 point lead in the third round), TKO (cannot continue or knocked out opponent), and golden score (the first to score 2 or more points in a deciding 4th round). Penalties are given as points to the opponent for infringements including stepping out of the ring, falling down, holding/grabbing, attacking a fallen opponent, inaction, and punching to the face.
