Dojang is a term used in Korean martial arts such as taekwondo that refers to a formal training hall. It is typically considered the formal gathering place for students of a martial art to conduct training, examinations and other related encounters. Meaning Do (道) means 'the way' or 'art' and Jang (場) means 'a place'. Which makes dojang the place where one practices the way. In the case of martial arts it is the place where one practices the path of that martial art, much like dojo in Japanese. More specific terms such as "hapkidojang" or "taekwondojang" can be used for particular subtypes of dojang. The word dojang (道場) originates from Buddhism. The dojang is a place where meditation and practice takes place in the temple.

A dojang is a Korean word that’s used in Taekwondo and other Korean martial arts to refer to a training hall. They mean the same thing – it’s just that ‘dojo’ is Japanese whereas ‘dojang’ is Korean. The two words are actually cognates. In Korean hanja, dojang is written 道場. In Taekwondo, Tangsudo, Hapkido, and other Korean martial arts, Korean terms are used, and as such in those martial arts a training hall is called a dojang. Cognates in Korean and Japanese often have the same meaning but a different pronunciation, as is the case with dojo and dojang.

In ancient times, the place of training (Dojang) was often a religious building. As a result the building itself held a special significance in the life of the martial arts student. The spiritual significance of both the Dojang and the act of training fathered a culture and etiquette of it’s own. The student bows on entry and exit while facing the center of the Dojang. When the national and club flags are displayed, the student should bow facing those flags. Bowing to senior students shows respect for the training undertaken to reach their position. Ancient training routines were often extremely rigorous. One’s seniority became an indication of great dedication and resilience – qualities the new student hopes to mirror. In addition, senior students often help teach those of lesser skill. Over time, the respect for the position held by the seniors has been etched into the etiquette of the Dojang.

The Dojang is the Korean word for a formal training hall or practice hall.
The literal translation is “house of discipline.”
Thus, a TKD school may be referred to as a dojang.
A traditional Taekwondo dojang includes a training room containing mats and training equipment such as kicking bags, shields, and mirrors for students to watch themselves practice.
Some clubs offer additional equipment such as weights, pools, and saunas.
In a traditional TKD training area you will see a Korean flag and a flag of the country where the school is located.
These flags should be respected by all students.
The national flag is hung to respect the homeland of the students.
The Korean flag is hung to show respect to the Korean nation, the home of the founders and originators of Taekwondo.
