Wai Khru Ram Muay, often shortened to just Wai Khru or Ram Muay, is a ritual performed by Muay Thai fighters in the ring before the actual fight commences.
The ritual consists of 2 parts, namely Wai Khru and Ram Muay made up of 4 different Thai words.
Wai is the Thai customary way of greeting with the palms put together, showing a form of respect.
Khru comes from the sanskrit word guru which translates to teacher, so Wai Khru literally means paying respect to the teacher.
Ram means dance in the old traditional sense and Muay is the Thai word for boxing so the term refers to the dance of boxers/fighters.
The entire Wai Khru Ram Muay ceremony is performed to the soundtrack of Sarama, an unique rhythmic traditional Thai music that also accompanies the fights.

The traditional Muay Thai dance ritual is composed of 2 parts, the wai kru and the ram muay.
The traditional Muay Thai dance ritual is performed before the fight with traditional sarama or muay thai music.
The wai kru is the portion of the muay thai dance where the fighter circles the ring 3 times before kneeling and bowing 3 times to show respect to God and man.
Ram means dance and Muay means boxing… so put them together and you got a ‘boxing dance!’
The ram muay is simple movements that the fighter demonstrates to the crowd to show their style and control.
Each ram muay is personal and unique ranging from very elaborate to easy and simple.
Sometimes you are able to tell what gym the fighter trains at because most fighters from the same gym have a similar ram muay wai kru.
What Is The Wai Kru?
Is it the same as the Ram Muay?
The wai kru and the ram muay are the two parts of the traditional Muay Thai ritual.

Wai khru ram muay is a ritual performed by participants before fighting in Muay Thai competitions.
Wai khru, or Wai kru, is a Thai concept that exists in almost all of Thai performance art - from traditional Thai music to classical Khon dance and fighting arts, such as Krabi Krabong and Muay Thai.
The ritual consists of 2 parts: "Wai khru" and "Ram muay," made up of 4 different Thai words.
The full term can therefore be translated as "war-dance saluting the teacher," but Thai speakers generally shorten it either to Wai khru or Ram muay.
Similarly, the Ram muay is a series of choreographed movements often performed before a Muay Thai bout to show respect and gratitude to the fighter's teacher, parents, and ancestors.
Over the centuries, Wai Kru has transformed from a pre-battle Muay Thai ritual to a timeless tradition embodying respect, gratitude, and cultural heritage.
The ram muay is a personal ritual, ranging from the very complex to the very simple, and often contains clues about who trained the fighter and where the fighter is from.
The ritual is intricately linked with two significant symbols: the Mongkhon and the Pra Jiad.
These traditional accessories hold deep cultural and spiritual significance and are often incorporated into the ritual to enhance its meaning and symbolism.
The ram muay is accompanied by music, providing a rhythm to the fighter's movements.
