What is the downside of Muay Thai?

I experienced significant downsides. It was tied to the daily practice of violence and aggression. This and similar violent outbursts could be attributed to the stress of my professional life — opening the café, running the Responsive Conference — but that would be false attribution. I’m not proud of everything that came out of my time practicing Muay Thai. I was surprised, too, and somewhat bewildered by my own actions. My bloody knuckles were a useful reminder for the next several days. When I walked away from Muay Thai in September, I left behind the intensity of the practice and the anger.

Limitations of Muay Thai for Self-Defense
Some Muay Thai techniques, particularly in the clinch, can be complex to execute under stress.
While Muay Thai includes some sweeps and throws, it doesn’t cover ground fighting, which can be a significant aspect of real-world confrontations.
Sparring Safety: Boxing sparring often involves more head contact, which may be a concern for some practitioners.

One major issue with Muay Thai is that it has no ground grappling.
As we all know, Muay Thai is very grapple heavy, with holds becoming the go-to option for fighters in a tight sport who want to avoid any more punches.
However, when it gets to the ground, the tradition stops.
In MMA, fighting on the ground is a very important part, as many fighters proactively try to bring the fight to the floor to get that submission or to avoid the heavier upper body strikes.
Muay Thai also lacks the bopping and weaving we often see in other schools such as traditional boxing.
In the ring, this can be a problem as those trained only in Muay Thai may struggle to dodge a powerful right hook in time.
The head is a lot more exposed too, with the fists and arms slightly further away from the upper body, given they also come into play in defending against body attacks.
Another issue Muay Thai fighters may face is that moment during the round kicks where the hand drops, leaving an open target for a lightning speed attack from your rival.
If a Muay Thai fighter throws a right round kick, his hand will drop down behind the buttocks.
If you are on the receiving end, you can step into the kick, reducing its power, and deliver an unblockable right cross or left hook of your own.

The money isn’t livable.
The reality is that the money you make as a professional Muay Thai fighter isn’t always enough to sustain you.
And it certainly does not financially justify all the hours put into a single fight.
Even if you’re at the very top of the sport, it can be difficult to make a living wage from fighting alone.
This means that you may need to find additional work or rely on sponsorships to make ends meet.
Any injuries sustained from fighting are your responsibility to bear long term – financially and otherwise.
This lack of protective gear also means that any injuries you sustain during a fight are your responsibility to bear.
This can be financially and emotionally difficult, as injuries sustained in the ring can have long-term consequences.
Fight promotions do not provide long-term care for CTE and other conditions that result from fighting.
You’re judged harshly by viewers if you don’t fight “enough” or if you lose certain fights.
It’s very easy to lose sense of who you are, how to listen to your body, and how to balance yourself as a person with your life outside of fighting.
Only a few mistakes can seriously set you back and may even cost you your career.
Whether it’s a poorly executed technique, a bad performance in the ring, or even an offhand comment made in an interview, any misstep can have serious consequences.
Fighters have sustained serious injuries from training or fighting, and some of these mistakes could be indirectly related, such as poor nutrition or bad weight-cutting techniques.
