Kuk Sool Won is derived from ancient Korean martial arts called Sa Do Mu Sool, Boo Kyo Mu Sool and Koong Joon Mu Sool.
It was founded by Grandmaster In Hyuk Suh.
To be brutally honest with you I think there are really only two types of unarmed MA in Korea.
TKD and HKD and everything is related to one of those two types.
Hwa Rang Do is developed from the teachings of Su Ahm Dosa, and Dr. Joo Bang Lee who was a hapkido 8th dan under Choi Yong Sul.
Tang Soo Do is not related to Kuk Sool Won nor Hwa Rang Do.
Tang Soo Do is developed from Shotokan and Chuan Fa.
Kuk Sool Won is not mentionned as hapkido in the text but Hwa Rang Do is linked to hapkido through Dr Joo Bang Lee.

Kuk Sool What is Kuk Sool?
The term Kuk Sool does not describe a single art but the combination of many arts primarily being Korean in nature.
The Kuk Sool HapKiDo, Kuk Sool Won, Kong Shin Bup, Hwa Rang Do and other Korean Martial Arts systems are derived from the same base arts with Korean, Chinese, and Japanese influence.
Kuk Sool Hapkido and Kuk Sool Won are nearly the same art.
The main difference between a typical HapKiDo curriculum and a Kuk Sool curriculum is the inclusion of empty hand and weapon forms in the Kuk Sool arts.
You will find Kuk Sool Won popular within the U.S.A. under GM Suh, In Hyuk and Kuk Sool HapKiDo popular in Korea under Seo, In Sun.
Even though the spelling of the last names are different the Suh/Seo Grandmasters are brothers.
The main difference between the two associations is that the WKSW requires it's members to follow a much more strict set of political guidelines.

I am often asked if Hapkido Kuk Sul Won is the same as Kuk Sool Won as practiced by the World Kuk Sool Association.
To answer this question we have to look at the history of Korean martial arts.
Combining their knowledge, these Masters created what would become known as Kuk Sool which is a shortened version of Han Kuk Moo Sool or "Martial Arts of the Korean Nation".
The Kuk Sul Hwe disbanded in 1966 and after this Lee Han Chul formed Hapkido Kuk Sul Won which flourished in Korea.
Grandmaster Kim also taught Hapkido Kuk Sul Won.
He was also a certified Master with The Korean Kido Association, the Korea Hapkido Federation and the World Kuk Sool Association.

Kuk Sool Won was created, in part, to give Korean people their own martial art.
Its name even means, "National Martial Art".
Many other Korean martial arts practitioners wanted the same thing after the Japanese occupation had ended.
They saw that Korean culture had been destroyed by the Japanese, and they wanted some martial art that Koreans could call their own.
They absolutely wanted nothing to do with the Japanese.
So you will find nothing but denial of any claims of non-Korean and especially Japanese derivation from within the style.
If you compare those martial arts with Taekwondo, Hapikido, and Kuk-Sool-Won, you'll see a lot of the same elements.

Kuk Sool's joint locking component consists of the martial art hapkido.
In fact, though many of these masters started their own martial art systems, during the 1960s, they all called their martial art "hapkido" (ie: "Kuk Sool Won Hapkido" and "Hwarang Do and Hapkido");
however, Hapkido was the only martial art which they all shared.
All Kuk Sool is comprised of three main arts: Hapkido: A Jujutsu imported from Japan.
It's worth noting that almost all of these contributors were students of the Hapkido a certain Choi Yong Sool had brought back to Korea from Japan.
Hapkido is Choi's Korean name for what in Japan is known as Daito-ryu Yawara Aiki-jujitsu.
