Most scholars think of this as a novel although some argue for its authenticity. For those who argue for the authenticity of the manuscripts, the importance of Hwarang segi is that is one of the scarce historical works about Silla by a person of Silla himself, and it is free from Confucian dogma and morality. If the Hwarang segi manuscripts are authentic, later historians have based their understanding of Three Kingdoms era on Goryeo Dynasty sources like Samguk sagi and Samguk yusa. However, even if it turns out to be Park Chang-hwa's novel, its value as a historical source is likely to be recognized. For instance, Lee Do Heum from Hanyang University suggested that "Hwarang segi," written by Park Chang-hwa, could be a manuscript of the original "Hwarang segi," or a reprint of the original manuscript in later years. Those arguing in favor of the manuscript include Young-hoon Rhee, a professor of economics at Seoul National University. Those arguing against include Richard D. McBride II, who maintains that it was a leisure writing or fictional work composed by Bak Changhwa because he composed many other fictional writings. The historical validity of these Hwarang Segi manuscripts is still in controversy among many scholars of early Korea and Korean studies.

The Hwarang, which translates to Flowering Knights, were the elite group of noble warriors during the Kingdom of Silla of Ancient Korea. The Hwarang were brave young warriors selected from the royal court who were taught since young to defend their beliefs and to serve the King. The foundation of the Hwarang were established by then famous Buddhist Monk, Wonkwang Bopsa, who gave them five laws to follow. Although most of the times they were outnumbered against the enemy, the Hwarang were victorious not only for their exceptional fighting skills, strength, and courage, but especially due to their immense bond of brotherhood, duty, honor and loyalty for each other and their King. Their secret combat skills, preserved in an art called Um-Yang Kwon, were passed down through an unbroken succession of 58 generations to the very present day. In their early teens, they became generals in the King's Army as a Hwarang Knight, each in charge of 1000 to 5000 Rangdo. They were trained in all aspects of combat, leadership, philosophy, civility, as well as the arts, literature, poetry, and deep spiritual practices. General Yoo Shin Kim is the most famous of all the Hwarang Knights, he led the unification wars and united the country for the first time in Korean history. Their glorious feats resound in eternity. Stories and legends about the Hwarang have flourished in Korean literature.
