Aerobic activities warm up your body, make your heart beat faster, and make you breathe quicker and deeper. Try to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity every week. Activities that get your heart rate up include brisk walking jogging or running. Strengthen your muscles will help you manage your breathlessness. Try to do activities that improve your muscle strength at least twice a week. Climbing stairs and using an exercise bike can help strengthen these muscles. The talk test When you’re active, it’s normal to get out of breath, but not too much. You can check if you’re doing the right amount of exercise with the ‘talk test’.

When you are physically active, your heart and lungs work harder to supply the additional oxygen your muscles demand. Some types of exercise can also strengthen the muscles of the neck and chest, including the diaphragm and muscles between the ribs that work together to power inhaling and exhaling. Aerobic activities like walking, running or jumping rope give your heart and lungs the kind of workout they need to function efficiently. Muscle-strengthening activities like weight-lifting or Pilates build core strength, improving your posture, and toning your breathing muscles. Breathing exercises in particular can strengthen your diaphragm and train your body to breathe more deeply and more effectively. As your physical fitness improves, your body becomes more efficient at getting oxygen into the bloodstream and transporting it to the working muscles. That's one of the reasons that you are less likely to become short of breath during exercise over time.

Like aerobic exercise improves your heart function and strengthens your muscles, breathing exercises can make your lungs more efficient. If practiced regularly, breathing exercises can help rid the lungs of accumulated stale air, increase oxygen levels and get the diaphragm to return to its job of helping you breathe. Pursed Lip Breathing This exercise reduces the number of breaths you take and keeps your airways open longer. More air is able to flow in and out of your lungs so you can be more physically active. To practice it, simply breathe in through your nose and breathe out at least twice as long through your mouth, with pursed lips. Belly Breathing, aka Diaphragmic Breathing As with pursed lip breathing, start by breathing in through your nose. Breathe out through your mouth at least two to three times as long as your inhale. Ideally, you should practice both exercises about 5 to 10 minutes every day.

Diaphragmatic breathing helps you use your diaphragm correctly while breathing to increase lung efficiency. Diaphragmatic breathing allows you to use your lungs at 100% capacity to increase lung efficiency. Diaphragmatic breathing offers several benefits to your body including increasing how much oxygen is in your blood. Diaphragmatic breathing can help several conditions that cause symptoms that affect how you breathe including anxiety asthma and COPD. Diaphragmatic breathing can help treat certain conditions but it shouldn’t be the only treatment. Lie on your back on a flat surface or in bed with your knees bent and your head supported to practice diaphragmatic breathing exercises. Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your stomach moves out causing your hand to rise while practicing diaphragmatic breathing exercises. Tighten your stomach muscles so that your stomach moves in causing your hand to lower as you exhale through pursed lips. At first practice this exercise for five to 10 minutes about three to four times per day and gradually increase the amount of time you spend doing this exercise. As with learning anything new the first few times you practice diaphragmatic breathing it may be difficult but with continued practice diaphragmatic breathing will become automatic.
